  1. The Annual Paint & Automotive Outlook 2018

2018 looks to be a promising year for the chemical products industry. In spite of seismic changes to the economic and political environment, scientists and researchers continue to forge new paths forward, creating innovative new products and finding ways to be active in new fields and markets. Green science and sustainability continues to be a major theme of the industry; major companies continue to dedicate efforts to finding sustainable solutions and reduce their environmental impact.

Meanwhile, the automotive industry continues to prosper in the United States. Interest in electric cars continues to trend upward as costs decrease and new innovations improve battery technology. Sales of electric cars such as the Tesla and the GM Bolt rise as driving ranges approach 300 miles and price tags continue to drop.

The excellent presence and interest in National Manufacturing Day each October is a testament to the continued resilience of American manufacturing. More than 18.5 million Americans are employed in the industry, with each dollar spent on American manufacturing creating an additional 40 cents for the United States economy. Events connected to National Manufacturing Day were aimed at creating awareness of the breadth and depth of American industry and how it ranges from the shop floor and scientist lab to a number of residential, commercial, and military applications.

In that vein, support for science and manufacturing education continues to increase on campuses across the country. Since the 2008 recession in particular, enrollment in STEM programs and support by government administrations at all levels has been on a steady rise. As a result, the total number workers in these fields have grown at a 3% clip through 2013 compared to 2% for the general workforce.

Gage Products Company continues to stand at the forefront of these changes, offering efficient, sustainable solutions in these and a number of other industries. We’d like to thank all of our customers, partners, and employees for a successful and exciting 2017 and look forward to an even better 2018!

This year’s Earth Day celebration marks the 46th anniversary of the event and continues to focus attention on the importance of today’s environmental issues. Although Earth Day is celebrated annually, the mission for a sustainable future is something that needs to be contributed to daily. At Gage, we incorporate sustainability into our brand through values, philosophy, and commitment to environmental responsibility and continuous improvement. Conducting business in a socially responsible manner is extremely important to us as we lead the way through progressive environmental stewardship.

Because we are a chemical company we make environmental management a priority. Over the past 30 years we have committed to reducing our carbon footprint through sustainable business practices. This includes promoting sustainable product alternatives and reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations and distribution channels. Areas we have focused on include reducing energy and greenhouse gas emission, addressing water use and waste water treatment, and improving solid waste and recycling systems.

Our aim is to take the industry by storm and work towards becoming the world’s preferred supplier of chemical related products. Today, we are well on our way to achieving that goal. This year the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge took place on March 7th, 2016 through the 12th, and it was no surprise to us that the challengers went hard again this year. The event that annually takes place in Houghton, Michigan, brings together contestants of all different kinds. At Gage Products, we are personally involved with the gas and diesel sleds specifically, and we’re no rookies to the cause. This was our 15th year sponsoring the event while donating alternative fuels to the challenge. Electric snowmobiles were also included in the competition.

At Gage, we take a special interest in the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge because it allows students to challenge themselves with engineering and design – to ultimately test capabilities. The common goal of the challenge? To redesign an existing snowmobile in an attempt to reduce both emissions and noise.

The other events that the snowmobiles competed in this year included: fuel economy/endurance, acceleration, handling, static display, cold start and design.

The breakdown of the winners this year went as follows…

The overall winners of the gas competition:
    1. University of Wisconsin – Madison
    2. École De Technologie Supérieure & Clarkson University tied for second

The best fuel economy on the endurance run, in the order they placed:
    1. University of Idaho – 19.3mpg
    2. Clarkston University – 18.9mpg
    3. École De Technologie Supérieure – 18.5mpg

And last, but not least, the overall order for the diesel mobiles:

In the top right corner of our website, you’ll notice a drop down, where you can choose to view our information in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Having a multi-language website is important to us for a number of reasons.

The ability to connect with potential business across oceans is made easier into the digital age, but we want to be able to connect our full span capabilities and technical language with them with ease. Sharon Stahl, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Gage, accepts the Creativity in Implementing Sustainable Practices Award.

The relationship between original equipment manufacturers and their suppliers is a delicate and important one—but when the Environmental Protection Agency gets involved, an entirely new level of collaboration is reached. The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment encompasses all three of these entities to form a space for small, mid-sized and large suppliers to come together.

The purpose of this partnership is for these groups to share ideas and brainstorm on the best business practices for the environment. As you know, Gage considers recycling to be one of the company’s core elements, and we’ve blogged about our initiatives and ways we support going “green.” We’re happy to announce the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment has chosen to recognize us with the Creativity in Implementing Sustainable Practices Award for our closed-loop solvent recycling program.

This remanufacturing program aims to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact. From the moment a project starts to anywhere in between project completion, recovery and repurposing are possible. We’ve seen plenty of positive results, and we will continue to push for sustainability in all aspects of our business as a part of our rethink_refine_resolve initiative.

    EcoCar Students

Want to plug into the future? That’s exactly what 15 universities across North America are doing as part of the EcoCar competition. The program, established by the Department of Energy and General Motors, offers a chance for the next generation of automotive engineers to gain hands-on, real-world experience.

Each team was awarded a 2013 Chevy Malibu to work on, with the goal of designing an American-made automobile with less dependence on oil and more environmental benefits. In May, competitors spent six days in Yuma, Arizona, testing out the drive quality and environmental impact of their vehicle, which were evaluated on safety, performance, utility, safety, and reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Pennsylvania State University’s ethanol (E85) plug-in hybrid electric vehicle impressed the judges and inspectors enough to win the competition for the second year in a row.

    TonyJangCar

Tony Jang, business manager for Gage’s fuel segment, alongside a few EcoCar competition entries.

At Gage, we love innovation, and we believe in supporting educational endeavors and the  outreach of a younger generation. Because of the exceptional results and dedication to this program, we are proud to provide the specially formulated fuels to the university teams participating in the annual competition. As leading supplier of test fuels, custom fuels blends, and reference fuels, Gage has also been a proud sponsor of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge for the past 11 years.

We can’t stress the importance of being involved with new ideas—especially when clean energy and reduced environmental impact is the basis of these projects. For more information on Gage’s sustainability efforts and initiatives, head over to our website.

  10. We’re a ‘Green Leaders Automotive Innovation’ Honoree!

Our recent “Why Recycling Is Good For Your Company” blog discussed the cost-effective and eco-friendly bonuses of reusing existing materials instead of making new products out of raw materials. For the past few decades, we’ve aimed to set “green” standards within our industry while pioneering sustainable closed-loop recycling systems, which reduces costs and increases resource management.

We’re proud that more than 100 million gallons of liquid organic materials has been recycled and remanufactured—especially when considering this material could have gone into a landfill or another form of disposal. We have also developed customized fuel blends made from Michigan-made sustainable resources such as ethanol-based fuels and biofuels.

Many organizations across the globe make reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing negative environmental impact a priority—and we consider ourselves one of those companies. Our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint through sustainable business practices that meet today’s needs and support the needs of future generations is important to us.

By having sustainability ingrained in our corporate culture, we are fully committed to advancing our environmental programs and policies. For us, conducting business in a socially responsible manner is the only way to conduct business.

Our hard work has been previously highlighted in Automotive Design & Production and Waste News, and we are excited to announce that the Detroit Free Press named us a Green Leaders Automotive Innovations honoree. Each year, the Free Press recognizes organizations working toward making Michigan a greener, more environmentally sustainable state, and for the past 25 years, that’s exactly what we’ve aspired to achieve.
