Leave a CommentThe largest environmental movement on the planet is Earth Day. Celebrated every April 22 since 1970, the Earth Day Network is supported by over 50,000 partners in 195 countries. The mission of the movement is to bring awareness to issues that affect public health and the communities we live in, while motivating people to change the status quo around the globe. Over 1 billion people join in activities each Earth Day in an effort to make our communities and world a better, more greener place to live.
More than 20 million U.S. citizens participated in the first Earth Day which has been credited with beginning the modern environmental movement. Activities seek to use education, create public policy, and provide consumer campaigns to further public knowledge on the damages done to the planet and her inhabitants. The first Earth Day helped to pass landmark legislation such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act. As the movement grows each year, more awareness is brought to the forefront in a range of ways so we can all help to better our planet.
